The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences (http://eberly.wvu.edu) at West Virginia University invites applications for an Advising Specialist based in the College’s Undergraduate Studies Office. The ECAS Undergraduate Studies Office focuses on day-to-day experiences of students and faculty, including direct advising, working with departmental advisors, assuring undergraduate majors are on track toward meeting requirements for graduation, working with students who are not in good academic standing, coordinating experiential learning/internship opportunities, and supporting cross-disciplinary Arts and Sciences strategic plan initiatives, including post-baccalaureate transitions.

The successful candidate will be expected to assume significant student advising, recruiting, and development responsibilities. Duties will include establishing plans of study for students who are not meeting their major’s benchmarks; advising students who want to explore a new major within the college; assisting students who are on deferred suspension or have been reinstated; developing and teaching courses, workshops, and/or modules that enhance cross-disciplinary Arts and Sciences undergraduate education goals; developing and teaching workshops, course modules, and/or courses that enhance students’ career transition skills; and working with the Associate Dean to achieve Undergraduate Studies Office priorities. Required qualifications include: a Master’s Degree in an Arts and Sciences major or a closely related field and one year of experience in teaching and/or advising at the college level. Additional qualifications include;  working effectively with at-risk students on developmental skills and across disciplines on job search topics; evidence of excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills; evidence of attention to detail; evidence of ability to assess and enhance the effectiveness of advising, recruiting, and development activities.

This Program Coordinator-Advising Specialist position is categorized as a Faculty Equivalent. It is full-time, 12-month, and benefits eligible; it does not carry faculty rank or accrue tenure credit. Start date is January 1, 2014, with potential for earlier transitional arrangements depending on the selected candidate’s fall term commitments.
