Summary:

The employee assists users in finding materials in the Health Sciences Library, provides general assistance in the use of both print and online references/sources, and shares Circulation service desk duties with other Circulation staff Tuesdays-Fridays; solely responsible for overall Library operations on Saturdays.  The incumbent also oversees management of the Reserve Collection, assists with stacks management and maintenance of the government documents collection, and provides back up for the interlibrary loan service as needed.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for checking out and checking in monographs, journals, course reserves, Interlibrary Loan materials, and media, using Voyager, the Libraries’ automated system, or manually when necessary.  Accepts fines; updates patron records; assists clientele in locating materials and in searching online catalog and library databases. Assists/instructs patrons in the use of photocopiers, microfilm readers, scanners, and audiovisual equipment.  Answers general inquiries in person and by phone regarding serials, indexes, general bibliographic citations, and online resources.  Provides general reference assistance when the Reference Librarian is off duty.  Troubleshoots copiers, printers, microfilm readers, scanners, and audiovisual equipment; replaces paper/toner; monitors overall physical appearance/condition of the HSL. Shares searching responsibilities for missing items; oversees student workers in searching for items; shelves returned material/shelf-reads; oversees student workers in carrying out those tasks.
  • Solely responsible for Saturday Circulation desk operations, reference assistance, and overall library operations. Oversees/trains/supervises student assistants—shelving, shelf-reading, shifting, and desk operations. Responsible for working a normal daytime work week during periods when the Library has reduced hours.
  • Manages course reserve operations in the HSL. S/he processes faculty reserve requests, including both print and online course reserves. S/he aids faculty in creating “web ready” documents for electronic reserves. Creates temporary locations in the automated system and maintains all necessary records, including copyright compliance; adds/removes course reserve materials as appropriate. Tracks statistics; prepares monthly report.
  • Coordinates overall stacks management in the HSL including shifting of monographic, serial, and software collections as needed; processing new books and materials; and maintaining statistics.
  • Provides backup for Interlibrary Loan Department in the processing of borrowing and RAPID requests; familiarity with SERHOLD, OCLC and MARC records, and online catalog such as Voyager, essential.
  • Assists the Reference Coordinator in maintaining the Government Document Collection by receiving, checking in, processing and weeding materials according to standard procedures and federal guidelines.  May be assigned special projects or other duties by the Circulation Supervisor or Library Director. 

 

Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree in liberal arts or related field required.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.

One year experience in the following:

  • Experience working in library atmosphere
  • Computer, word processing, spreadsheet experience
  • Public/customer service experience

    • The incumbent may spend over 60 percent of the work week standing and walking; shelves and retrieves materials from standard 90” high Library shelving, moves book and depository trucks, and carries materials up to 25 pounds.
