West Virginia University School of Nursing invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Nursing and E. Jane Martin Professorship in Nursing.  As the chief administrative officer and academic leader of the School, the dean operates with a vision of the School’s future in mind; promotes a positive organizational culture and empowers faculty, staff and students to achieve excellence; establishes an atmosphere of fairness and optimism; and ensures that the School effectively performs its teaching, research and service missions within the available resources.  The Dean provides leadership and management of all academic, research and public service programs; budget and resource allocation; fund raising and external development; and representation of the School to various constituencies.  The Dean represents the School throughout the state and nationally in the development of collaborative relationships with other universities, industries, experiential sites, and professional societies.


  • An earned terminal degree in nursing or other appropriate specialty area, e.g. education administration.
  • A graduate degree in nursing.
  • Qualifications consistent with the requirements for academic rank as tenured professor.
  • The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment as the E. Jane Martin Professorship in Nursing, by virtue of being a regionally, nationally and/or internationally recognized scholar in the field of nursing.
  • Commitment to excellence in education, research and scholarship.
  • Evidence of educational, scholarly, and creative achievement commensurate with appointment as a full professor.
  • Prior experience in fiscal responsibility, budget management and strategic planning.
  • Experience with program/curriculum development and personnel management.
  • Demonstrated collegial leadership style with students, faculty, staff, administration and the local community.
  • Established excellence in interpersonal and communication skills; ability to be an effective spokesperson for the School.
  • A strong commitment to the development of students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to attract external funding.
  • Administrative experience in an academic healthcare environment.
  • Ability to foster teamwork to accomplish programmatic objectives.
